Using techniques of form criticism and discourse analysis, this article aims at developing a better understanding of the famous Quranic verses (Q 54:1–2) on the splitting of the moon, traditionally understood as a miracle of Muhammad. It is also considered the only complete tahlili-based commentary to date. This study also found that Nur al-Ihsan commentary was the first Malay Quranic commentary book and it was printed in the year 1934. Thirdly, a lot of attention was given to the interpretation of certain verses and surahs in Juz 'Amma. Secondly, translation activities were mainly directed to Arabic Quranic commentary works that were widely used by the community then. Tahlili-based commentaries had the most number of works, however it was found to be quite superficial in its discussions. The authors' inclination in their writings can also be summarized as follow: Firstly, most common styles of commentary writing applied by authors of that time were tafsir tahlili, tafsir ijmali and tafsir mawdu'i. At that time, the focus was on verses that were commonly recited by the Muslim community on a daily basis. Results showed that commentary writing in Malaysia began in late 1920s triggered by translation activities of Arabic Quranic commentaries. This study applies the historical and content analysis method. In addition, the number of verses or juz' interpreted will also be taken into consideration. Categorization is based on the style or approach of the commentary whether it is tafsir tahlili, tafsir ijmali, tafsir mawdui, tafsir muqaran or translation. The present article seeks to identify the trends in writing Quranic commentary in the 20th century based on the. However, the focus of these researches has mostly been limited to historiography and chronology, apart from introduction to authors' works and the methodology applied by them in their commentary writing. Numerous researches have been done on Quranic commentary writing in Malaysia.
